Events: 4th June 2023

Calling all musicians (and aspiring musicians)! We’re hosting a special event to build a foundation of our Los Angeles musician community. Frank Hoppe will teach a workshop on playing music for contra dances. He has chosen six tunes to form three sets. The tunes Nancy & Over the Waterfall are from a book catering to mandolin players, including a staff with TAB, but the notation should be easy enough for folks to follow. He will start with these. If that goes well, he will try the others: Jamie Allen/Rock the Cradle Joe and Seneca Square Dance/Hollow Poplar, in that order. The Seneca set would be the hardest. Whether you’re a dancer who plays (or is learning to play) an instrument, or whether you’re an experienced musician, we want you to join us! Altadena Community Church 943 E Altadena Dr Altadena, CA 91001 The workshop is $10 (pay-what-you-can), and all workshop attendees get free admission to the contra dance that immediately follows the workshop. See details for the dance on our website or on facebook. Workshop: 1:00pm Contra Lesson: 2:00pm Contra Dance: 2:30pm – 5:30pm Bring your own instrument. All skill levels welcome and encouraged! The safety of our community is important to us.
